Electional astrology is the traditional practice of choosing a favorable moment to begin something important, such as a wedding, a business launch, a contract signing, or a move. Rather than reading a chart after the fact, you look ahead for windows that match the guidelines for the kind of event you are planning.

The practice has roots in Mesopotamian omen traditions and was written down by Hellenistic authors such as Dorotheus of Sidon, whose Pentateuch (often called Carmen Astrologicum) dates to around the 1st century CE and is among the earliest surviving astrological texts. Tradition holds that Baghdad's founding in 762 CE was timed by court astrologers.

Traditional guidance looks for a waxing Moon in Taurus, Cancer, or Libra, with Venus and Mercury direct. Friday, the day of Venus, is the classic choice. Avoid a void-of-course Moon at the ceremony.

Look for a waxing Moon with Mercury and Jupiter direct. Thursday (Jupiter) and Sunday (Sun) are the classic days. The Moon should not be void of course.
Surgery and Medical Care
Old texts prefer a waning Moon and warn against the Full Moon, but there is no evidence that astrology affects medical outcomes. Schedule care with your doctors, and never delay treatment because of astrology.

Key Factors in Electional Timing

Moon Phase

A waxing Moon (new to full) is traditionally linked with growth and beginnings, and a waning Moon (full to new) with endings and release. The scanner computes the phase from the actual Sun-Moon angle.

Void-of-Course Moon

The Moon is void of course from its last exact major aspect to the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn until it enters the next sign. Tradition says things begun then may come to nothing. The scanner calculates the real start and end times of each void period.

Retrogrades

Mercury retrograde is the best known: many astrologers avoid new contracts, launches, and travel then, and use the time for review. The scanner also checks Venus, Mars, and Jupiter where they matter for the event you chose.
